Thanks everyone who made out Grower's Invite so much fun! We had between 70-80 farmers and resource people (Master Gardeners, WSU staff and students, etc.) attend our lunch and the field tours. Thanks to everyone who participated in our taste tests, we are looking at the results now as we decide what to add to our catalog this year.
Thanks as well to the farmers who provided the corn that we grilled: Schuh Farms, and ACX 7501 from Gary Fiddler at Skagit River Produce, grown by the Boling Boys.
And to Steve Radich for the potatoes he grows, an heirloom variety called Nicola.
After lunch and socializing, we took a quick look at the screening and greens trials planted around the office, and then all caravaned out to Fir Island and the acre that Osborne Seed Co. rents for our field trials. Jules Riske led the main tour, Ada Crowl talked about spinach, and Chris Osborne and Ron Hull shared some of their considerable knowledge on onions.
Thanks everyone who attended for your interest and questions!
We think it is a great opportunity to see new and substitute varieties growing, ask questions, and generally prepare yourselves for the next growing season. Trying new varieties is always fun, but can be a little unnerving. Being able to see them before growing them yourself is a smart move, could save you money, and may help you get a jump on a new market opportunity. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
